🍂 Why Autumn Is the Perfect Time for a Family Adventure

We’ve been treated to some lovely weather lately, and at times it’s been hard to believe that autumn is actually on its way!

But look a little closer and the signs are beginning to appear.

The evenings are getting shorter, the first leaves are starting to change and conkers, seeds and berries are beginning to pop up around us. Over the next few weeks, the places we know so well will start looking very different.

And that’s one of the things we love most about autumn at Enspire.

You don’t need to plan a big day out or travel somewhere special to enjoy it. A local park, woodland, garden or even your usual walk can become an adventure if you slow down a little and notice what’s changing.

And children are brilliant at this.

While we’re thinking about where we’re going next, they’re often the ones who spot the tiny mushroom, the strange-shaped leaf, the feather on the path or the very important stick that absolutely has to come home.

Autumn gives us a lovely excuse to let them take the lead for a while.

Instead of hurrying them along, try stopping when they stop. Ask what they’ve noticed. Let them investigate. You don’t need to know the answer to every question either.

Sometimes, “I don’t know — let’s have a look” is enough.

Why are those leaves changing colour? Where do squirrels hide their food? What made that little hole in the ground?

You don’t have to turn every walk into a lesson. Just being curious together is part of the fun.

One of the nicest things about autumn is seeing familiar places change too. A park you’ve visited dozens of times can suddenly look completely different. The same tree can change from week to week. The same path might be covered in leaves, seeds or berries that weren’t there before.

A really simple question to ask is:

“What can you spot today that wasn’t here last time?”

That one question can make children look at a familiar place in a completely new way.

And family adventures don’t have to be long either.

Twenty minutes outside after school can be enough. A quick wander through the park, a little explore in the garden or a short walk before dinner can still become something memorable.

Sometimes children don’t need lots of activities planned for them. They just need a reason to look a little closer.

And that’s exactly why we created our Autumn Adventure Challenges.

There are 12 simple challenges to help families explore, notice and have a bit of fun outdoors together. You can print them out and create your own little trail, or just keep them on your phone and choose one every few minutes as you walk.

There’s no pressure to complete them all in one go. In fact, it can be more fun to come back to them again and see what has changed.
